In The Doll World doll podcast is joined by Ria Mendoza Hoyt, award winning doll artist and owner of OrangeJar.com for a wonderful interview at www.inthedollworld.com/creators
Ria shares with us that her doll journey came a little later in life. In 2010, she began using polymer clay while taking a class a one-day class. In that class, she learned the traditional methods for making clay pots in Sharjah, UAE. She fell in love with clay and continued making a variety of items and figures using clay.
It wasn't until 2015, when Ria attended her first doll making class. A year later, she earned first place in a couple of local state fairs. In 2019, she joined the Professional Doll Makers Art Guild (PDMAG). The next year, she won three PDMAG Gold Awards.
In her interview Ria speaks about her desire to make Filipino dolls. "Being Filipino, I started with the goal of creating dolls wearing traditional Filipiniana clothes." She also spoke about the difficulty with finding clay in skin tones that reflect the beautiful people in her native land.
Ria's doll journey continues to evolve. Currently, she is focusing on fantastical creatures: "I love creating from mythology, folk lore, fantasy. Then, I add my own little dark twist!"
"Doll making is still an ongoing learning process [for me]". She says she continues working to balance her doll making and her life. "There are years when I only made one or two dolls. I am buckling down and making it my goal, to always create, improve, learn, and repeat, and continue pushing this journey forward."
Ria will also be hosting a free class on Budget Friendly Photo Studio at the upcoming Professional Dollmakers Art Guild (PDMAG), Online Convention being held Oct 15th-24th, visit www.pdmagconvention.com
